Survival Awareness – Hurricane Sandy Coming Ashore

In case you have not been following the news, Hurricane Sandy is finally coming ashore and threatens easily 60 million people on the East Coast.  I hope people affected by this storm took the time to prepare themselves with specific survival items such as water, food, backup power such as generators, first aid supplies, extra clothes, means of cooking food and heating water and a wide variety other survival gear essentials.

The East Coast is bracing Monday for the impact of a powerful Category 1 hurricane as it barrels toward the mid-Atlantic with 95 mph winds and a storm surge that forecasters called “life-threatening.”

Survival Awareness – CDC Reports More than 1,100 Cases Of West Nile Virus

It’s not an influenza pandemic, but the West Nile Virus can be pretty nasty and is something to be aware of.  It is transmitted through mosquitoes and this year there have been a lot more mosquitoes than previous years.  At this time last year there were only 21 cases reported nationwide.  Now there are more than 1,100 and that has the CDC concerned.

While the West Nile Virus is probably not going to cause a major breakdown in society, it can get to proportions that can be disruptive, so it is good to be aware of it. Continue reading “Survival Awareness – CDC Reports More than 1,100 Cases Of West Nile Virus”

Survival Awareness – News Feeds, 620 Million Without Power

Over 620 million people are without power in India after power grid failures.

Check out this story from FOX NEWS.  And remember, this has happened here in the United States:  North American Power Outage

FROM FOX NEWS:  India’s energy crisis cascaded over half the country Tuesday when three of its regional grids collapsed, leaving 620 million people without government-supplied electricity for hours in, by far, the world’s biggest blackout.

Hundreds of trains stalled across the country and traffic lights went out, causing widespread traffic jams in New Delhi. Electric crematoria stopped operating, some with bodies half burnt, power officials said.

Two hundred workers were stranded in three coal mines in West Bengal when the blackout cut off electricity to elevators in their underground pits, a mining company official told The Times of India.

“We are waiting for the restoration of power to bring them up through the lifts, but there is no threat to their lives or any reason to panic,” Nildari Roy, a senior official at the mines’ operator, Eastern Coalfields Limited, told The Times of India.

The massive failure — a day after a similar, but smaller power failure — has raised serious concerns about India’s outdated infrastructure and the government’s inability to meet its huge appetite for energy as the country aspires to become a regional economic superpower. The power failure affected people across 20 of India’s 28 states — about double the population of the United States.

Now, imagine how you would be affected where you live without any electrical power for just a couple days, then imagine if it lasted a few weeks.  Another reason to prepare, and there are plenty of older posts on this site that can help you get prepared for such an event and other events.  Just takes some time and some effort.
The power grid system in use today in America is old technology and could fail easily.  You cannot compare India to America in this regard, both countries are more equal in this regard than many people would believe.

Survival Awareness – Email From A Reader

I have received an email from a reader of this blog, who will be referred to as Michelle moving forward, and decided to post it here to share with everybody.  Everybody has a unique/different situation when it comes to prepping, as you will see in Michelle’s email:

I ran across your blog site and found it VERY helpful. I’ve recently taken up prepping and have been reading every book I can get my hands on. Because I have a family with 2 small kids and 2 big dogs, I’m having a hard time with the BOB and walking to a retreat location. I have BOB for each family member, appropriately sized for the little ones, but I just can’t see them walking very far. Is it absolutely crazy to have a vehicle as our only way out? I also can’t fathom them ‘surviving off the land’ for any extended amount of time.  Also, because we live in a suburb of (deleted for security reasons), I am having a hard time trying to locate a retreat location. We have 2 separate family member locations, one 40 miles away, one 500 miles away, but they are in suburbs too. We are not in a financial position to purchase a real “retreat property” so what do you suggest we look into? Do we leave the dogs to fend for themselves in a yellow or red event? What type of bug out vehicle do you recommend?” Continue reading “Survival Awareness – Email From A Reader”

Surival and Disaster Planning – Don’t Forget Sanitation When The Grid Goes Down

Sanitation is going to be an issue in a green, yellow or red event.  Of course the longer a disaster event the more serious and better prepared you should plan being in regards to sanitation.  Why is sanitation so important?  Because people right now are used to being able to turn the knob at the kitchen sink or in the bathroom and get plenty of water to wash dishes and take showers.  People are used to being able to do their laundry either at home or at a local dry-cleaners.  Right now you collect your garbage a few times a week and put it out near the curb so the garbage man can pick it up and haul it away.  Right now when you flush the toilet your waste gets pumped away and you don’t have to give it another thought after the fact.

So if you don’t know how to keep proper sanitation when major disaster strikes, especially during a yellow or red event, the chances of you getting sick and dying increase tenfold.  Disease/sickness will run rampant if you do not know how Continue reading “Surival and Disaster Planning – Don’t Forget Sanitation When The Grid Goes Down”

Awareness – Clintonville Wisconsin And The Need For A Bug Out Bag

Clintonville, Wisconsin has been plaqued by strange booming noises and possible earth tremors the past few days – all unexplained.  It has made the national news.  Below is an excerpt from FOX News:

CLINTONVILLE, Wis. –  Bemused curiosity is turning into worry and aggravation for families in a small Wisconsin town longing for peace and quiet after three nights of mysterious booming noises that have sent some residents into the streets — sometimes still in their pajamas.

Survival Awareness – Massive Solar Eruption With Power Outages, News Feed

Yet another reason to do a quick check of your survival gear and survival food stores.  In this instance it sounds like the solar flare will have a minimal impact.  But these things can happen with very short notice, and it is always better to be prepared.  If not for this event, then for another more serious event.  Article below:

Jan. 22 at 10:59 p.m. EST, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory caught an extreme ultraviolet flash from a huge eruption that originated from our sun.

According to NOAA, this is the strongest solar radiation storm since May 2005, and as a precaution, polar flights on Earth are expected to be re-routed within the next few hours, Kathy Sullivan, deputy administrator of NOAA, said today at the 92nd annual American Meteorological Society meeting in New Orleans, La.  A barrage of charged particles triggered by this morning’s solar flare is expected to hit Earth tomorrow at around 9 a.m. EST (1400 GMT), according to experts at the Space Weather Prediction Center, a division of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Scientists call these electromagnetic bursts “coronal mass ejections” (CMEs), and they are closely studied because they can produce potentially harmful geomagnetic storms when the charged particles rain down Earth’s magnetic field lines.

In addition to generating stronger than normal displays of Earth’s auroras (also known as the northern and southern lights), geomagnetic storms aimed directly at our planet can also disrupt satellites in orbit, cause widespread communications interference and damage other electronic infrastructures.

Note from page Editor: There is some concern regarding solar flares knocking out entire power grids, and it has happened in the past.  This is a great example of a green level event.  For further reading on this site check out this link; survival awareness.

Good Example Of A Green Level Survival Event – Current News

It is all over the local news for October 30th and 31st.  Major snow storm hits the northeast and millions are without electrical power, and in many areas it is suspected to be almost a week before power is restored.  This is a prime example of a green level event, and one that you should be able to prepare for if living in climates that get snow storms.

Connecticut: 800,000 without power

Massachusetts:  640,000 without power Continue reading “Good Example Of A Green Level Survival Event – Current News”

Survival Awareness – Terrorist Detonated Dirty Bomb

If you have been watching the news over the past few weeks you have heard of the Iran linked terror plot to assassinate foreign ambassadors on U.S. soil by means of an implemented explosive device (IED).  More recently there has been another terror plot uncovered in Texas where five foreign Muslims were arrested and found with pictures of “infrastructure” around the country including malls, government buildings and water systems.  A quick internet search of news over the last few months will show many terrorist plots being uncovered all around the world, and some some places they are not uncovered in time and people die.

The threats are out there, and it is no hidden secret that terrorist groups would like nothing more than to be able to get their hands on radiological material and detonate a bomb on United States soil or one of our allies far that matter.  It was just this past anniversary date of 9/11 that it was suspected a dirty bomb was going to be detonated in or around New York City.  Terrorist are much more likely to be able to get their hands on material for a dirty bomb than have the ability to detonate a nuclear bomb.  So for now lets focus on dirty bombs and what we can do to prepare. Survival Planning For A Power Grid Failure – Check Your Survival Gear

Another example of a green level event is a blackout.  Blackouts can happen at anytime and anywhere.  The information provided in this blog post will just go to re-enforce that survival planning for emergency situations is important.  Having backup food stores and extra water on hand for your survival needs can go a very long way when the grid goes down.  So read this interesting blog and then go back and check your current survival gear supplies.  It’s funny sometimes how reading an article such as this can make you think about things you can do to make yourself better prepared.

Without a doubt one of the weakest points in our country’s infrastructure are the power grids. Continue reading “Survival Planning For A Power Grid Failure – Check Your Survival Gear”

Preparing For A Green Level Disaster Event – Part Two

In Part One of this two part blog the things discussed for preparing to survive a green level disaster situation was water, food, and shelter.  In part two the topics will be geared towards first-aid kits and miscellaneous items that can be part of your survival gear.

First Aid Kits

Preparing for any survival situation should include a good first aid kit.  You certainly will want to have a personal first aid kit in your bug out bag, but you will also want to have a slightly larger kit for Continue reading “Preparing For A Green Level Disaster Event – Part Two”

Preparing For A Green Level Disaster Event – PART ONE

Of the three different lengths of disaster events, the green event lasting up to ten days is the easiest to prepare for.  Usually a green event can be met by hunkering down in your home.  However, this is not always the case, as some disaster situations may dictate that leaving your home is the safest thing to do.  Always think about your safety, and do what is right for you and your family in any disaster situation. In part one of this two part blog the topics of discussion will be survival water, survival food, and your shelter.

Water

You should plan on having a minimum of 1 liter of drinking water per person per day, and another liter of water per person per day for cleaning/washing/sanitation.  A person can easily die in 3-5 days without water depending on the environment.  And just because you are hunkering down in your home do not expect Continue reading “Preparing For A Green Level Disaster Event – PART ONE”
