Sanitation is going to be an issue in a green, yellow or red event. Of course the longer a disaster event the more serious and better prepared you should plan being in regards to sanitation. Why is sanitation so important? Because people right now are used to being able to turn the knob at the kitchen sink or in the bathroom and get plenty of water to wash dishes and take showers. People are used to being able to do their laundry either at home or at a local dry-cleaners. Right now you collect your garbage a few times a week and put it out near the curb so the garbage man can pick it up and haul it away. Right now when you flush the toilet your waste gets pumped away and you don’t have to give it another thought after the fact.
So if you don’t know how to keep proper sanitation when major disaster strikes, especially during a yellow or red event, the chances of you getting sick and dying increase tenfold. Disease/sickness will run rampant if you do not know how Continue reading “Surival and Disaster Planning – Don’t Forget Sanitation When The Grid Goes Down”
What looks like could be an interesting new show is premiering tomorrow night, February 7th at 9PM eastern time on the National Geographic Channel. The show is called “Doomsday Preppers”, and the show will explore the lives of supposedly ordinary citizens preparing for various end of the world scenarios.
Below is an excerpt taken from the National Geographic Channel website:
“‘Doomsday Preppers’ explores the lives of otherwise ordinary Americans who are preparing for the end of the world as we know it. Unique in their beliefs, motivations, and strategies, preppers will go to whatever lengths they can to make sure they are prepared for any of life’s uncertainties. And with our expert’s assessment, they will find out their chances of survival if their worst fears become a reality.”
I will be tuning-in to watch the first episode and seeing if it is worth while to continue watching. Who knows, but perhaps there is something to be learned from seeing other preppers talk openly about their preparations for survival, and to learn their reasons why they feel they need to be prepared. Personally I firmly believe in keeping hard details of my prepping plans such as retreat locations and amount of supplies I have secret. If some major event does take place people who know that you are prepared will show up at your door looking for help, or worse, Continue reading “Doomsday Preppers – National Geographic Channel”
Another Wisconsin regular gun deer season has come and gone. This year I find myself without having harvested any deer for the freezer. Oddly enough only two deer presented themselves to me this season, but neither of them presented good shots. It is not often that I get skunked, but it does happen. There just didn’t seem to be that many deer in the area that I hunt – the same area I have hunted for the past twenty years usually with great success. I hunt from the ground in a brush blind, and don’t bait the deer. Instead I rely on other deer hunters in the woods to push the deer around while I stay sitting and wait for the deer to amble by. Only on rare occasions do I leave my ground blind and walk about looking for deer.
So while I sat in my blind thinking about why I have not seen any deer, I got thinking about the need to hunt for food for survival or to at least help supplement stored food during an emergency situation. I didn’t get a deer during the nine day regular gun season, but when I go home I am not in danger of starving as I still have food in the pantry and I can go to the local market and buy something to eat if I need to. But what if I don’t have that kind of luxury? What if I need to hunt for food to survive?
That brings me to the topic of survival hunting. Continue reading “Survival Hunting – Hunting For Your Food”
In part one I wrote about why it is a good idea to have a survival retreat, especially for those living near or around cities. Part two was about things to take into consideration when looking for a retreat location. Part three is going to be about stocking up your survival retreat for yellow and red events.
The fact is that if you are facing a yellow or red event than you can almost certainly expect the power grids to be down and then eventually everything else. You retreat will need to be ready for the kind of living our forefathers experienced before electricity and motorized equipment. You need to be ready to get back to the basics such as growing your food in a garden, using an outhouse, digging a well, patching threadbare clothing, making your own soap, Continue reading “Survival Retreat Planning – Part Three”
We are all lucky to live in this great country that is The United States of America. For the most part all of us go through our daily lives with an understanding of our place in life and have certain expectations of modern living. Modern living is of course having still the best healthcare in the world, flat screen TVs in two out of three rooms in the house, indoor plumbing, fast telecommunications, well stocked grocery stores, and of course law & order.
However, the fact of the matter is that the thing we call modern society that allows us to live so well, is maintained by a very thin thread that holds everything together. The system that supports our way of living can come crashing down faster than most people would Continue reading “Things Can Go Wrong – Why You Need To Think About Survival Preparedness”
